7 Tools to Improve Your Storage Experience
We understand that storing items can be stressful. Our goal is to help make your storage experience as stress-free as possible. As part of this process, we have created a list of items that can really improve your storage experience. These tips will keep your things in good shape and limit the time you will spend searching for items. We understand that you don’t want to spend a lot of time inside your storage unit so some of these tips are designed to speed up that process. The other tips are recommendations on how to keep your items in the best shape.
Light or Flashlight
It can often be dark and hard to see inside of your storage unit. Even with daylight or lights outside, it can be tough to see. That is why a light kept by the entrance can be a lifesaver. When you’re storing things, you want to be able to find things quickly. By purchasing a flashlight or floodlight and keeping it in your unit you will be able to find things much quicker. If you followed some of our other rules about labeling your boxes, you can use your flashlight to read what is in each box.
Some customers used their storage units on a daily or weekly basis. If you are one of these people, it can be beneficial to have a light source. Something like a flashlight will really improve your storage experience when you’re organizing and moving things around. One of the flashlights we recommend has magnets on the back. This way you can still have light in your unit while having your hands free.
When you are using a storage unit something like shelving can make a huge difference. Many storage units have high ceilings and to get the most out of your square footage shelving can really help. Another benefit of shelving is that you’re able to access things at any level. For instance, say you have something at the bottom of a pile, you have to move all the boxes on top to get to that. However, if you have shelving you can easily access the bottom shelf as easily as you can reach anything on the top. this will make your life so much easier every time you visit your storage unit.
Something to be aware of when purchasing shelving is that you want it to be sturdy. If you have shelving that can be easily tipped over, increasing the risk of everything falling towards the front of your unit and having trouble opening it up. This is something we often see when people pile up boxes and the whole pile topples over. With shelving, this is much less likely as long as it is solid and sturdy.
When packing your shelves, try to keep heavier items on the bottom. this will help you keep a lower center of gravity. This will reduce the risk of it toppling over and the strain that it will put on your back trying to lift a heavy item high.
Shelving can be great but without a way to access those top shelves, they are useless. Keep a step ladder in your storage unit so that you can reach your items on the top shelf. Improve your storage experience easy by having a step ladder handy so you can access all the items inside your unit.
Most storage units are 8 to 11 feet tall creating more space for you to store your items. That’s great and all but how much space can you really use? By using a step ladder, you make using all that space possible. Better yet use your step ladder and shelving to make access even easier.
We recommend a step ladder that can fold up easily with large platform steps to keep you safe while climbing up and down. Three to four steps should be enough for you to reach the top items in your storage unit. If you need more than that then maybe a larger ladder would be best for you. Keep your ladder in your storage unit for every visit so you don’t have to remember to bring it or take up extra space in your car.
Clear Plastic Bags or Totes
Sometimes labeling boxes can only do so much. You might have three or four boxes with very similar names making it difficult to know what is inside each one. This is where something like a clear plastic tote or clear plastic bag becomes really beneficial. When you’re in your storage unit and looking for something you often don’t have hours to go through every box to find that one thing you’re looking for. By having clear plastic totes or bags you are able to see what’s inside of each container. This will speed up the time that you spend searching for that item.
By using a clear plastic tote or bag you also limit the amount of dust that can accumulate on your actual items. You also want to make sure that when you put items into these containers that they are fully dry. Any moisture can easily become mildew and eventually mold.
An industry standard is to try and keep things off the ground as much as possible. Pallets are a great tool to improve your storage experience. The reason for this is that condensation can occur on the floor, creating moisture that can affect your items. Even in a climate-controlled storage unit when it’s hot outside and you have a colder temperature inside it will always create a bit of moisture. Another reason for using pallets is that in the case of a flood you give yourself another few inches before your items get affected.
As part of our goal to be as helpful to our customers as possible we have plastic pallets available for rent. When you come to rent a storage unit from us please ask us about our pallet program. We will happily provide the number of pallets that you need for your storage unit.
Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets
When you are storing items in your storage unit bugs can become a nuisance. Many storage units have pest control practices in place. However, a little extra added precaution is never a bad thing. Something like a bounce fabric softener sheet can be a great way to add a little more peace of mind to your storage experience.
Bounce fabric softener sheets also smell nice helping to keep your items smelling fresh. If you have ever been in a storage shed or warm garage you know that over time it can smell musty. Many items, especially fabrics can absorb that smell and start to smell like it. By using bounce fabric softener sheets, you can keep your things smelling fresh while keeping the bugs away.
Closets can be one of the toughest things to move. All those hangers and clothes can quickly become heavy and take up a lot of space. Get yourself a wardrobe box for when you are moving and take your closet and put it in the box hangers and all. No need to take all the clothes off hangers and then back on when you are done with your move.
Wardrobe boxes come in very handy when moving but remember your clothes are still just as heavy. Make sure to have two people on the box to help prevent any injuries when moving it into your storage unit. Place the box inside your unit and take it to your new home. This way you can go from closet to closet with fewer trips back and forth.
